35 Years to the Day!!
35 years ago on this day in 1977, what humbly began as a partnership with the Navy League, consolidated multiple military recognition events into one grand celebration. Acknowledging the achievements of our junior enlisted military members, the Salute recognizes annually, the Alaska Service Personnel of the Year.
Service Personnel of the Year candidates face stiff competition from their peers, resulting in 12 elite service members representing each branch of military service in the State of Alaska.
The Annual Salute to the Military, through the efforts of the Armed Services YMCA of Alaska and the Anchorage community has become one of the longest running annual events hosted by a non-profit organization in Alaska.
Retrospective of the first Salute: Date: February 17, 1977 Location: Anchorage Westward Hotel Tickets: $15 per person Attendance: 398 people Keynote Speaker: U.S. Senator Ted Stevens
Since then the Salute has outgrown every hotel ballroom in Alaska. In that time, we have had the honor of hosting keynote speakers including Senators, Governors, Secretary of Defenses, Chairmen of Joint Chiefs, Generals, and community leaders.
Reaching 35 years is no small feat and has been made possible thanks to the relentless community support of our military. Here’s to another 35 years recognizing the achievements of our military in Alaska!
