"It doesn't take a hero to order men into battle. It takes a hero to be one of those men who goes into battle." - Norman Schwarzkopf
The most respected addresses in Alaska aren't in Juneau or affixed to homes atop the hill in South Anchorage. The residences that command the most attention are tucked away on quiet streets like Goodwin and Fairchild in housing areas on Elmendorf Air Force Base. It may look like an average house on an average street, but inside its 4 walls there is a wounded soldier surrounded by family aiding in a journey of recovery.
Donated by JL Properties, managed by Aurora Housing and maintained by the Armed Services YMCA of Alaska, these homes are known as Heroes Homes and in 2008 they provided assistance to more than 20 families. Our Heroes Homes allow family members who may not have been able to otherwise afford to come to Alaska, to help aid in the recovery of their loved ones. It has been made possible through community donations.
Each home is fully furnished with everything needed for a comfortable stay, including beds, linens, towels, sofas, cable tv with dvd players, washers & dryers, dishwashers, full sized microwaves and a lot of love.
The primary need is for wounded heroes, but based on availability, the housing can also be made available to out-of-town military family members requiring medical treatment at local hospitals. Due to limited availability, it’s important to call as soon as you discover a need.
